Quick Water Mitigation Saves a Flooded Home

Barbara Nagy • September 24, 2024
At Chris' Carpet Service & Water Restoration, we know how overwhelming it can be when unexpected water damage strikes. Recently, we got a call from a worried homeowner dealing with a flood that affected multiple areas of their home, including the entryway, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The damage was extensive, with water pooling on the laminate and tile floors, and even seeping into the bathroom ceiling. The homeowner needed immediate help, and we were ready to step in. Here’s how we tackled water mitigation of the flooded home.

A Call from a Concerned Homeowner

The homeowner contacted us after discovering water flooding into their home. Water had spread quickly across the entryway, living room, kitchen, and bathroom, causing damage to the floors and the bathroom ceiling. They were understandably worried about the potential for mold growth and further structural damage. We assured them that our team would arrive quickly to assess the situation and start the water mitigation process.

How We Saved a Flooded Home

Once we arrived, we immediately performed an inspection using a moisture meter to determine the extent of the water damage. Here's how we handled the job:

Water Extraction

The first step was removing all the standing water. Using our high-powered water extraction machine, we removed water from the floors in the entryway, living room, and kitchen. This process was necessary to prevent further damage to the flooring materials and reduce the risk of mold.

Setting Up Drying Equipment

After extracting the water, our next focus was on thoroughly drying the affected areas to prevent further damage and the potential growth of mold. We used specialized equipment to make sure all excess moisture was removed. Here’s how we handled the drying process:

  • Air Movers: We placed air movers strategically around the entryway, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. These devices helped circulate air, increase airflow, and speed up the drying process on floors and walls.
  • Floor Drying Mats: To tackle moisture trapped in the laminate and tile floors, we used floor drying mats. These mats were designed to draw out moisture from deep within flooring materials, preventing warping or other damage.
  • Targeting the Bathroom Ceiling: The bathroom ceiling had absorbed water, which required extra care. We positioned air movers specifically to target this area, directing airflow upwards to ensure thorough drying and avoid hidden moisture pockets.

Continuous Monitoring

During the drying process, we consistently monitored the moisture levels with our moisture meter. This step ensured that our drying methods were effective and allowed us to make adjustments as needed. We continued this monitoring until all areas reached normal moisture levels.

Final Inspection and Clean-Up

Once the drying process was complete, we thoroughly inspected the areas to ensure no hidden moisture remained. We removed our equipment and cleaned up the affected areas, leaving the home as close to its original state as possible.

Another Successful Project

Thanks to our quick response and careful approach, we successfully mitigated the water damage in the entryway, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The floors were saved from severe damage, and we were able to dry the bathroom ceiling without having to tear down any drywall. The homeowner was incredibly grateful for our fast and efficient service, knowing that our work had prevented further issues, like mold growth or structural damage.
